With more than 20 years of experience as a speech and language pathologist, Mrs. Taylor has experience building communication skills in students ranging in age from 3 to 21. She has worked in a range of settings, including homes, preschool centers, public and non-public schools. She is licensed in the state of Maryland and holds a certificate of clinical competence through the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. In 2019, Mrs. Taylor was awarded the Stuttering Foundation of America's Western Workshop Fellowship, and in 2020 earned her second masters degree in Human Resource Development, focusing on Educational Leadership. In addition to her work with students, Mrs. Taylor has been an invited speaker, Clinical Supervisor, and an Associate Professor at local universities.
All students should be given the opportunity to reach their potential through the use of evidence-based practices selected based on student performance. Progress is seen when students are engaged through motivating activities and relationships with families, teachers, and peers. Students are not limited by their disabilities, rather they should be empowered to use their strengths to overcome their learning differences.
During therapy sessions, services are individualized based on a student's specific learning profile. Services address all areas of communication, including speech, fluency (stuttering), functional communication, comprehension, oral expression, and written language. Mrs. Taylor employs a range of evidence-based therapeutic strategies to support students in meeting their communication needs. Speech and language therapy services may be provided to students who have been identified with a specific communication disorder (e.g. ADHD, specific learning disability, dyslexia, dysgraphia...).
As an expert in language development, Mrs. Taylor offers generalized lessons helping students of all developmental levels build their oral and written language skills. Students who participate in tutoring services may be typically developing in their learning profile and simply looking to boost their skills in oral or written expression, or they may have a communication disorder and are looking to build upon strategies they are working on in therapy. Therapy sessions are more individualized and focus on strategy development, while tutoring sessions focus on developing specific skills.
Intervention and strategy development based on a student's individualized needs
Based on your child's individual needs, Mrs. Taylor will select the appropriate therapeutic techniques to help remediate your child's articulation skills. Mrs. Taylor is trained in a variety of articulation strategies and will develop an individualized plan for your child based on their unique needs. Strategies include PROMPT (TM), the Cycles Approach, or a range or other evidence-based approaches. An initial assessment is required.
As a 2019 award recipient for the Stuttering Foundation Western Workshop Fellowship, Mrs. Taylor believes the primary goal of fluency therapy should focus on building a student's confidence in their ability to communicate effectively. Cognitive therapy is supplemented with fluency shaping and stuttering modification techniques, An initial assessment is required.
Services range from functional communication through higher level language such as comprehension and narrative development. Strategy development is emphasized as students learn to overcome communication challenges. Mrs. Taylor is trained and experienced in a range of multisensory strategies, including the Hanen Approach, Floortime, Expanding Expression Toolkit, Social Thinking & Paragraphology (TM). Special interests include Autism, Dyslexia, and Dysgraphia. Initial assessment is required.
Group sessions focused on skill development
Students will meet 2 times each week during this 5 week course. Students will learn the basic elements needed when developing paragraphs. Lessons are based on the Paragraphology (TM) curriculum, a multisensory, scaffolded approach to written language. Additional writing supports rooted in Self-Regulated Strategy Development are woven throughout lessons to build the student's ability to revise and edit their own work.
Students build on the Paragraphology (TM) structured approach to written language that was introduced in the Basic Paragraphs class.. New skills include expanded paragraph writing and writing for different purposes. Self-Regulated Strategy Development elements continue to focus on building a student's ability to edit and revise their work to produce a more accurate final draft.
Once a student has mastered the Paragraphology (TM) process for developing paragraphs, he or she may enter this class which teaches students to use the approach when tackling lengthier and more complex writing assignments. Self Regulated Strategy Development principles continue to be reinforced, promoting independence in a student's ability to monitor, edit, and revise their work.
